Emily Dickinson

"Could I -- then -- shut the door --
Lest my beseeching face -- at last --
Rejected -- be -- of Her?"

Nearing an end...

I hadn't done anything in photoshop up to this point or experimented with photomanipulation.  Considering the concept of building something, creating something from found materials, then photographing the work.  There is a sense of alteration here anyway, the nature of the piece changes and becomes something else entirely.  I wanted to experiment with the idea of using old photographs and combining them with those of my door, so the door then takes on a different meaning.

The Build

This is how I went about building a door from scratch, I thought I would have planned it out but I didn't really.  I just went out to my garage with a nail gun and built it.

(Don't let this photo fool you, it was winter.  And it was cold.)

Frame first:

And then the rest...

(Close-up : that last one is lead)

Sorry about the picture quality, I know it's pretty horrendous.  And above is what the door looked like finished.  (I also used materials such as lead, paper and wire, not just wood).

Prints

I want try out as many different processes as I can in this project, including print.
Here are some of my woodcuts:

and some of the resulting prints:

Working On Building A Door

Sketchbook:

I have decided that my next step is to build a door.  Because I want it to be life size, I will use large scraps of wood and whatever else I can find in my garage.  I want this door to be less like a real door and more like the door that I imagine a door to be.  It will be my representation.
